So, you’ve been stuck in your house for weeks now.
You’ve seen the same sights, walked the same paths, and you’re sick to death of it all. You can wallow in misery until the outside world becomes a friendly place again...or you can work with what you have and transform your space into something completely new! Here’s how:
Create Your Own Art
Now don’t start by thinking, “I’m not an artist! I can’t make anything!” There are so many ways to create art, and if you limit yourself to painting and drawing, you’re missing out. You can cut out pictures from magazines and make a collage. You can melt crayons onto canvas. You can use digital software. If you think you can’t make art, you just haven’t found the right medium.
Once you’ve made your masterpiece, whatever it is, put it up on the wall and let it be a reminder that something beautiful can always be created, no matter how dark things seem.
Paint a Piece of Furniture
Another great way to let those creative juices flow and make something new is to take an old piece of furniture and give it new life with a paint job. A simple coat will do wonders, but if you’re feeling adventurous you could even choose multiple colors for different parts, and if you’re redoing a bookshelf or something with drawers you can also incorporate wallpaper to add a pattern to the interior.
Nothing says “I’m an adult now” like curtains! That little extra effort to dress up your windows makes a big difference not only in the look of your house, but in the comfort level too. If you have a room that gets particularly warm in summer and cold in winter, adding thermal or blackout curtains could help considerably. If you’re skilled with a sewing machine, you can even make your own curtains.
Try New Furniture Configurations
The best tip for when you’re tired of the way your home looks is to move things around. Sure, this might be rearranging instead of redecorating, but you’d be surprised by how much a simple change can alter the way your space looks and feels. Feng shui your house and see how much it changes the feel! You have all the time in the world now, so why not try a layout you never would have before? If you don’t like it, you can always go back to the way it was before.
Give Minimalism a Try
Minimalism has died down a bit, but for a while it was the hottest trend in decorating (or “undecorating,” really). Since the style is all about less, not more, it’s easy to test out by simply removing excessive clutter. Store away those knicknacks you never look at, find a place for the junk sitting on the counter, remove all the kitchen gadgets you don’t use, and give your home a cleaner, lighter feel. Just as with rearranging furniture, if you don’t like it, you can always put your things back where they were.
Boredom is just a state of mind, not a state of life.
As bleak as things are outside, you don't have to feel like you're imprisoned inside! Since it seems like we're going to be spending a lot of time at home for the foreseeable future, why not make your space fun & cozy? Your room/house should be your sanctuary, so decorate it as you see fit!
