How to Celebrate Your Birthday in Quarantine

Some of us are crazy about our birthdays.

We make big plans to celebrate, we look forward to getting together with friends, and we enjoy a day that’s entirely about us. This year, quarantine has put a bit of a damper on celebrations. You might be wondering how you can make the day special when you can’t see your friends or leave the house. Well, you might not have the kind of birthday you’re used to, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make it fun!

Have a Movie or Video Game Marathon

Have you ever wanted to watch all the Harry Potter movies in order? Or maybe you want to pull up Disney+ and stream all the shows you used to watch as a kid. Whatever your genre, set aside the whole day to slip into a fantasy world and let yourself relax into the stories.

If you don’t think you can sit and be idle or you’re not that into movies, what about video games? You probably haven’t been able to spend an entire day playing video games in a long time, so now’s your chance! You might even plan ahead and order a game you’ve been meaning to try out. Even better, if you have friends who game, you can get a group together online and have a gaming party!

A new, very cool feature that you can implement on Google Chrome is Netflix Party, which allows you and a group of friends to watch the same thing together, synced to the same time! Need something to watch? Check out our previous post on seven of our favorite feel-good movies!

Turn Your Kitchen into a Bar

Bars are the favorite birthday hangout of many, but you don’t have to go out to get the experience. Look up some mixed drink recipes, stock up on the ingredients, and become your own bartender! Obtaining the liquor might be a bit difficult in some states, so you might need to use a delivery service to get wine, cider, or beer, all of which can be used creatively in cocktails. For those who don’t drink, mocktails are delicious alternatives and won’t require a trip to the liquor store.

Not sure what to make? We have a whole series of posts on quarantine cocktails that you can view here.

Host a Video Chat Party

A birthday party isn’t entirely out of the question if you prefer to celebrate with friends. Just have a video party! You can plan out activities like word games or drinking games, or you can modify the movie marathon idea and have everyone watch the same movie. When it’s time to blow out the candles, you’ll realize the main benefit of having friends celebrate from afar: you get to eat the whole cake.

Bring Your Favorite Destination to You

What if you wanted to travel for your birthday, or you were planning a one day getaway? It won’t be entirely the same, but you can always recreate your destination at home. Were you supposed to be sunbathing in sunny Hawaii? Order some luau themed decorations online, throw on a few leis and put a flower in your hair, and enjoy a breezy tropical drink. If you were going to France, you could put on French music, make a classic French dish, and watch a movie set in Paris or the countryside. Since many museums and opera houses are currently offering virtual tours and performances, you can even get the cultural experience!

You might be tempted to skip celebrating this year since things won’t be the same.

But does different have to mean dull? These ideas just scratch the surface of what you can do to turn an ordinary day in quarantine into a special occasion. Don't let the pandemic keep you from enjoying your birthday, even if things aren't how you originally imagined!
