There’s two types of people:
- You love to clean (Monica Geller from Friends is your spirit animal)
- You detest cleaning (and what’s worse is you let your chores pile up)
If you’re part of the latter like many of us are, spring cleaning can seem like a daunting task. However, thanks to the quarantine, many of us can no longer avoid it. Thankfully there are ways to make spring cleaning much easier – and even a little enjoyable? We won’t go that far, but check out these tips that are sure to help!
Put on a good playlist or a podcast – skip the shows!
A trap many of us fall into is putting on a show or a movie in the background while cleaning. Even if you’ve seen the show a million times, you might fall victim into getting sucked into your screen and forgetting to get the chores done. Hey, it happens to the best of us. Because of that, we recommend putting on a fun playlist or an interesting podcast. Don’t have either of those? Check out our previous posts where we talk about up and coming music artists and some of our favorite podcasts.
Clean in increments
Blocking out a few hours of the day to clean, or setting aside a whole day even, is not going to help you clean productively. Instead, we recommend cleaning in 25 minute segments. Set a timer and clean an area of your house during that 25 minute period, take a 5 minute break, then repeat. This is called the Pomodoro technique – the idea behind it is that the timer will instill a sense of urgency and thus you’ll make as much progress as you can in that short amount of time as opposed to lollygagging the whole day. Don’t believe it? Try it out! You can use this method for almost anything you want to do productively, cleaning included.
Eat the frog first
Pause. What?! Don’t worry, it’s just an expression! “Eat the frog” means completing the most unwanted task first thing in the morning. In this case, do the chore you’re most dreading first. Why do this? Simply put, you’ll get it over with as soon as possible and have the rest of the day to enjoy. Getting the hardest task done first will leave you focused, productive, and motivated. So whether that’s finally committing to cleaning out your closet or giving the bathroom a good scrub down, get it done first and it’ll feel like a weight’s been lifted off your shoulders.
Turn on your fans, open the windows, and light a candle
Let that air in! Crack open the windows to let in some fresh air. Switch on your ceiling fans to get the air circulating, then light your favorite candle so a lovely scent fills your house. Choose a calming scent to ease your mind and make cleaning a little bit more enjoyable. Nothing feels as good as crisp clean air in your house!
Keep a giving heart while cleaning
Getting rid of things piling up in your house can be hard. It’s difficult to part with inanimate objects, who knew! But while cleaning and sorting through all of your stuff, keep the ‘giving’ mentality in mind. Haven’t worn that dress in a while? – Maybe your friend who always compliments you wearing it might love it instead. Too many toys cluttering up your kids’ playroom? There might be another family who could be blessed with all of those firetrucks and princess dolls! Times are tough right now, and if you keep the mindset that you’re happy to give your old things a new & loving home, you might make it work for every party involved.
Spring cleaning might be the last thing on your mind, but a bit of normalcy and order could do wonders for you.
Cleaning is awesome because it’s the purest form of instant gratification – who doesn’t love that? If you’re going to be quarantined in your house, you might as well do it in a clean one.
