What are the odds that any of us expected the Coronavirus pandemic to become what it is now?
Let’s face it, this virus is something that came completely out of left field. If covid-19 threw your life out of sync, the good news is you’re not alone. Many of us are struggling to adapt to the circumstances, whether that’s physically, financially, mentally, or emotionally. There was no way any of us could have predicted or prepared for what’s occurred, so don’t be too hard on yourself right now.
Here are a few things to accept in quarantine that might make your life easier and your mindset happier.
1. Gaining some weight is fine.
Ripping off the band-aid quick on this one. We’re in the middle of a pandemic, people! Many of us have been polishing up our baking and cooking skills, indulging in some feel-good treats, and maybe helping ourselves to another glass of wine. While you should always try your best to be conscious of your health, don’t let a few quarantine pounds upset you. Just be mindful of what you eat and do your best to get some exercise at home!
2. It’s okay to spend some “treat yourself” money.
If your bills and necessities are taken care of, you’re throwing money into your savings, and you’re overall financially responsible, don’t feel bad about wanting to do some (online) shopping. Even if it’s something small like Doordashing some bakery treats, you’re allowed to buy something nice for yourself! While saving extra money is the best option, you can also use some of it to do a little retail therapy. If it makes you feel better, shop sales and hunt for discount codes! Many online stores are offering coupon codes and deals due to the pandemic. Just remember that it might take a while for your order to ship in!
3. You’re allowed to feel sad over cancelled events.
Sometimes it seems like we live in a time where you can’t be unhappy because someone else has it much worse. That’s baloney! Newsflash: you’re entitled to your feelings. If a big event like a wedding, a music festival, or a birthday celebration got cancelled, that’s more than enough reason to be upset. Don’t let anyone disregard your emotions or make you feel bad about it!
4. Normal life will never return back to the old "normal."
This pandemic may have opened your eyes to things that need to be changed once the quarantine is lifted. Maybe you realized you had bad spending habits or you realized you can’t cook – or maybe you’ve been putting your focus on the wrong things or you decided you need to live a little more boldly: we’re all changed in some way. Whether you have to get rid of a couple bad habits or you’re intent on doing a complete 180, the old normal doesn’t have to be the forever normal. Times change, and so can you.
Acceptance is the first step.
Once you’ve acknowledged and made peace with certain thoughts that have been wrestling in your head, you can breathe a little easier and ready yourself for the next step, whatever that may be. The important thing to keep in mind is that everything will be okay.
